Vaughan
Expressive, juvenescent and bespoke, Vaughan Smithson’s ceramics are handthrown, hand-painted, and one-of-a-kind, capturing technical skill, attitude and experimentation with a lyrical twist of fate.Vaughan began his journey with pottery in 2015, drawn to the tactile nature of clay and the transformative power of the kiln. Over the years, he has developed a practice rooted in experimentation, exploring various clay bodies, forms, and glazes. While his work is predominantly wheel-thrown, Vaughan's focus extends beyond functionality to artistic expression, often creating larger vessels that blend tradition with contemporary design. Many of his porcelain vessels explore language as surface memory — cobalt inscriptions held within restrained, architectural forms.
Vaughan’s work celebrates the beauty of unpredictability, where each kiln opening reveals unique outcomes that fuel his passion for the craft. His approach is one of discovery, embracing the journey as much as the final form.
